Over and over again I see both women and men asking how they can advertise for little or no cost. Advertising does not always mean “an ad”.  I advertise constantly but almost never use an ad.

Here are several forms of free advertising:

1.  A signature line in outgoing emails.  I send and receive emails every single day. While some emails are from my kids or from mom and dad, many emails are from those who might benefit from visiting my website.  I never email out an advertisement, but I always put my first and last name and my URL.  I do know some folks use a one line advertisement in their signature. I choose not to, but one line is great.

2.  When you join an online community, use the profile and introduction board to tell folks who you are.  Do not use this space for an advertisement. Use this space to let folks get to know you.  I always let folks know I live in Santa Barbara. I can not tell you how many times I’ve gotten emails from others who have told me they have visited Santa Barbara and just loved it. By simply letting others know where I live, I have formed relationships and made sales. I also use this space to list my hobbies. How can someone make a connection with you if they don’t anything about you? I happen to have two dogs. I almost always let folks know I have dogs. This too has started conversations with strangers. We tend to buy from those we know and if we find something in common with someone, we feel like we know them.

3. Start a blog. A blog allows you talk about any topic you want to talk about. I know many people who have both a personal blog and a business blog. I have very often searched the web for something specific and been taken to someone’s blog entry.

4. Post comments on other peoples blogs. Not all blogs allow you to put your URL. I choose to post comments on blogs that allow me to put my URL. One of my favorite blogs to comment on is whatcanimakewithit.com This blog lists one food ingredient and asks you what can you make with that particular ingredient.

5. Article writing. This is one of my favorite forms of marketing. Every person who reads this particular article will see a link to my website. Some will click, some won’t. Of those who click, some will make a purchase, some won’t. If a publisher sees my article and likes it, he/she will use in their ezine, or on their site. This gives my link even more exposure. I wrote an article almost 10 years ago about passwording children. I still occasionally get emails from moms who tell me that my article has helped them. I wrote this article over 10 years ago. That’s an awful lot of free advertising for my sixty minutes of time to write the article. The more you write the less time an article will take. This article you are reading will take about 30 minutes to write. If you invest 30-60 minutes per day and write one article per day, you’ll have 365 articles online in a year’s time.

How to Develop an Online Business Strategy For Maximum Profits

With that information we can see that in order to make one sale a day we will need to get 100 visitors a day to our site. Now we can plan our traffic strategy so that we send at least 100 visitors a day, every day to our site and the sales will then have us where we want to be by the end of the third month in business. Now that we have the basics down, we can adjust our online business strategy and test to improve our conversion and increase our traffic to increase our sales. And by doing this we will easily stay on track to hit our goals going forward.

As you can see, setting an online business strategy by creating goals will take all the mystery out of building a successful online business. That’s how things stand right now. Keep in mind that any subject can change over time, so be sure you keep up with the latest news.

1.spiky. if the spikes are associated with news and viral marketing then that is not a big problem, but if they are sorta bought links, low quality links, etc. then this is sorta the worst way to do it.
2.linear. not as bad as spiky…but not as good as geometric. this is where a webmaster tries to build the same number of links each month.
3.geometric. this is where link building starts off slow, but then keeps getting better each month.

There are many ways in which you can get links to your site, some are ethical and proper – others are not!  If you are promised hundreds of inbound links, practically overnight then I would steer clear.  Google will know that you’re trying to gain an unfair advantage over your competitors and it will penalize you for it.

The best way to get inbound link building to work is the proper way! Get people to link to your site from theirs.  The second best method involves a lot of hard work (unless you’ve automated the process) which can be provide as an individual service on its own or incorporate it into an overall optimization package.

An analogy for inbound link building and how Google judges it would be: To imagine your website as a shop.  You’ve just built it in the middle of a huge field(as big as the world) and it has no roads, paths or tracks leading to it or anywhere near it(no inbound links).  If someone else with a shop likes your shop they will create a path (a link) to your shop. If someone else with another shop decides they like your shop, then they will create a path (link) to your shop.  As this process increases, the paths become roads and then the roads become motorways.  Before you know it, you have a motorway right up to the door of your shop. Think of the traffic!!

Now, although this sounds simple enough, you don’t want people building roads or even motorways to your shop that come from ‘dodgy’ shops(link farms) somewhere else in the field. These roads don’t bring the type of visitors to your shop that are likely to buy from you, so although you may get tons of traffic it’s not the right kind traffic.
